Lorem Ipsum: What It Actually Means & When to Use Placeholder Text
Where 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' really comes from, why designers still use it, when to swap it for real copy, and the alternatives when you need something different.
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…" — every designer has typed those words. Fewer know they're scrambled Latin from a 2,000-year-old philosophy text, or why we still reach for them in 2026.
What Lorem Ipsum actually is
Lorem Ipsum is dummy text — nonsense words used as placeholder content while a design is in progress. The current form was assembled in the 1960s by Letraset for dry-transfer sheets, then popularised again in the 1980s by Aldus PageMaker. The words themselves come from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a treatise by the Roman statesman Cicero written in 45 BCE.
The famous first word, Lorem, is a broken fragment of dolorem — Latin for "pain". The original passage begins "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…" — "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain." Letraset chopped and shuffled the sentences to make sure no one accidentally read it as real content.
Why designers still use it
Lorem Ipsum has a natural distribution of short and long words that closely matches real English prose. That means a paragraph of Lipsum looks — at a glance — like a paragraph of real text, so reviewers judge the layout instead of the copy. Three practical benefits:
- Realistic visual texture. No repeated "asdf asdf asdf" that betrays a mockup.
- Neutral tone. No one takes offence at Latin nobody reads.
- Reusable at any length. Words, sentences, paragraphs — scale to whatever the container needs.

Placeholder text is a scaffold, not a finish. Three moments to strip it out:
- Late-stage client reviews. Clients read the copy even when you tell them not to. Real (or draft) content surfaces real problems: overflowing headings, awkward line breaks, missing sections.
- Usability testing. Users can't complete tasks against fake copy. If a button reads "Lorem ipsum action", nobody knows what it does.
- Anything public. If a Lorem-filled page ships to production, search engines index it. Google treats gibberish as low-quality content — bad for rankings, worse for trust.
How much placeholder text should you generate?
- Card / tile — 1 to 2 sentences (about 20 words).
- Paragraph block — 40 to 80 words.
- Section body — 2 to 3 short paragraphs.
- Full article layout — 4 to 6 paragraphs plus a few subheadings.
Generating five screenfuls of Lipsum for a card that shows two lines just wastes review time. Match the amount to the container.
Modern alternatives to Lorem Ipsum
- Themed generators — Hipster Ipsum, Bacon Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum. Great for playful brands where the placeholder itself sets a tone.
- Draft real copy — even rough sentences beat Latin for exposing content problems early.
- Content-first design — write the copy first, then design around it. This is now the default at most content-heavy sites.
Practical checklist
- Use Lorem for early wireframes and layout exploration.
- Switch to draft copy before client sign-off.
- Never ship a page that still contains "Lorem ipsum".
