What is a Number to Words Converter?

A Number to Words Converter is a free utility that instantly spells out a numeric amount as written words — for example, 12,500 becomes "Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Dollars Only." Accountants, small business owners, freelancers, and bank clerks rely on this conversion every day when issuing invoices, writing checks, drafting contracts, or preparing official receipts where the amount must appear in both digits and words.

Writing amounts in words is more than a formality. It's a fraud safeguard rooted in centuries of banking practice: digits can be tampered with, but a fully spelled-out phrase is far harder to alter. If the numeric and written amounts on a check disagree, banks worldwide treat the words as the authoritative value.

Supported currencies & number systems

The converter ships with the most common world currencies, each with the correct major and minor unit naming. The default is the US Dollar; switch in one click to anything else.

How to write amounts on checks & invoices

  • Match the digits exactly. The words you write must equal the figure in the amount box. Mismatches cause banks to reject the check.
  • Always end with "Only." The word "Only" closes the amount and stops anyone from appending more money.
  • Spell the currency in full. Write "Dollars" instead of "$" or "USD" inside the words portion.
  • Use the right minor unit. Cents for USD, Pence for GBP, Paise for INR, Poisha for BDT. Many checks use fractions instead (e.g. 50/100) — both are accepted.
  • Fill empty space with a horizontal line after "Only" so no extra words can be inserted.

International vs Indian numbering

Most countries group digits in sets of three — Thousand, Million, Billion, Trillion. South Asia uses the Indian system: digits are grouped first in threes, then in twos, with units named Lakh (100,000) and Crore (10,000,000). The converter switches automatically when you select BDT, INR, or PKR (Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan all use Lakh/Crore in everyday finance); for any other currency you can flip the Indian numbering switch to use Lakh and Crore.

International

1,000,000 → One Million
10,000,000 → Ten Million
1,000,000,000 → One Billion

Indian (Lakh / Crore)

1,00,000 → One Lakh
10,00,000 → Ten Lakh
1,00,00,000 → One Crore

Privacy & performance
